Wimmera Hills

Wimmera Hill

Wimmera Hill features a large Pioneer Monument with a pick and shovel to represent the early mining settlers in the district, and a scythe and rake depicting the farming industry.

The monument was erected to the region’s pioneers in 1988 to celebrate Australia’s bicentenary as well as the centenary of settlement in Southern Cross. Each night the monument is lit up by an arrangement of lights in the form of the constellation “Southern Cross”.

A small walking trail weaves amongst mining machinery, and a plaque at the bottom of the hill provides information about the first gold strike in the area.

Visit Wimmera Hill to get a scenic view of the Southern Cross town site, local mine activity and farming in the area.
